The CDC now recommends that everyone wear a mask when going out in public, so here is some clarity to help you understand the difference between these mask, and why what’s most important is to COVER YOUR MOUTH AND NOSE WITH WHATEVER YOU HAVE AND CLEAN OR REPLACE IT AFTER EACH USE.

N95 mask are unattainable right now. You can’t find them in stores, 2-3 month online wait times, and even as an agency nurse, none of the facilities I work at have them and have been giving us ONE surgical mask for the entire shift. This is the same mask that we were originally taught DOES NOT protect against airborne ailments (which we do not know for sure that the coronavirus is or is not) and we were also originally taught to dispose of these mask after EACH patient encounter. However, in the midst of this pandemic wearing them for an entire shift or wearing our own homemade mask is our only option at this time.
The main difference between surgical and N95 mask is that surgical mask protects others from you and the N95 mask protects you from others. Each can partially do what the other can but those are the strengths of each. However, neither of these should be reused or worn for extended periods of time because at that point the mask now becomes a reservoir for bacteria (or virus) and can do more harm than good.
